South Americas Amazon rainforest is home to many wild animals, for example Sloths, Caiman lizards, Black panthers, Orangutan, Corydoras and many more. For a while now there has been fires and bulldozers causing mass deforestation and killing trees, rivers and animals. If we don’t act quickly it will all be gone in the blink of your eye. Animals are being illegally stolen and given to vindictive owners or cruel animal zoos for tourists to see, they are kept in horrible conditions. The Amazon rainforest holds approximately 20% of the worlds oxygen. That is a lot. We need to act quick .
Apalai walked through the humid, damp rainforest. He was hunting for his tribe, the Aikana. It had been weeks since they hadn’t eaten anything.
The Amazon was like their brother, helping them hunt their prey. But the Amazon was disappearing, little by little. And since there wasn’t much rainforest left, there wasn’t much animals left in it either. It had been years since they hadn’t seen that beautiful, jet-black fur of the panther.
Then, out of the darkness, a creature appeared. Not a creature like a panther, though. A creature like Apalai. A human.
“This is your death,” it boomed…
We flew further and further away from my home, my friends. Why did I have to leave my life behind? Even my dad, my mom, everything that was mine? We were going to South America. I had heard that the Amazon is vast, and holds more water than any river in the world. What if I could see all the wildlife that lives there?
Suddenly the plane started spinning and plummeting down to the rainforest below. Spinning and spinning down. Below the trees stretched their spindly arms out trying to snatch us. How can we survive? I scream. Then nothing…
The guide said goodbye and disappeared into the jungle. We were on our own.
We searched for the red-spotted roots to cure the deadly brain rotting illness. All we found were red flowers and green leaves, but among the entwined trees I saw red roots. I also heard rustling in the bushes and saw three pairs of orange beady eyes fixed on me and my crew. When the others saw the panthers they sprinted off in panic, stumbling over logs and branches. But I stood my ground. I was going to get the roots, even if it killed me…

We huddle round the bonfire that is licking and disintegrating the twigs into powdery silver ash. The cocoa pods are drying and strangely the night is frosty and cold. Usually it is scorching hot and the sun sweats our burnt palms. We heave our aching bodies to standing and stagger back to our hut. Forest surrounds us and makes us cosy. In a blink of an eye, I’m away. My sleep is deep and good unlike most nights. I get up, ready for a day of farming. But I always have to expect the unexpected. Instead of my normal activity, there is a school being built right before my eyes. It is a work in progress and needs us.
