We had a brilliant first Philosophy session with Miriam this week. So let’s keep up the impressive philosophical thinking!
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
Do you agree? Disagree? Why?
Post your ideas on the blog…alternatively you might have had a new idea to build on our discussion the other day. Get posting!
I think the meaning of “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for its not the same river and he’s not the same man” is that everything and everyone changes all the time. I think a human being is made up of memories and experience. As time goes by people and things get older and change.
I think the river is the same river and it isn’t the same river because its moving constantly and eroding therefore it’s different but, the river is still the same river because the path and the name haven’t changed. It’s the same with the man because his atoms are constantly changing but, he is still the same man.
Did you know that not a single atom in your body was there 5 years ago!
I disagree because it’s the same man and river but they just change over time. The water in the river is different and not all the cells in the man’s body are the same but the man is the same man and the river is the same river.
I agree because when months and years pass the man will get older and the the river will dry out and then the rain will fill in the gap.
Yes and no
The river has changed because the water has flown down and you have changed because you are a few minutes older, but if you go to a fancy dress party you are still you underneath, you have just got a costume on.
I think yes and no because the river has eroded and there is different water (no), but logically it is the same (yes). Hope you agree!!!!!!
I disagree, because the man steps in a different part of the river but in the same river overall.
I disagree because the man grew up, but the river is just the same!
I disagree because the man is the same person as he has the same DNA. The river Thames is still the same river from years ago because the river must of changed in its years but it’s still the same river.
I agree with the his statement because I think that ‘No man ever steps in the same river twice’ is meaning things change around people and the people change too. For example you would look at a picture when you’re 12 and love it, but when you’re 22 you might not like it so much. Or you go to a park when you’re 6 and when you’re 16, all the plants are mown down and an apartment is built on your favourite pond.
I agree because the man’s experiences are different each time. Everything changes like our planet. ‘The River’ is just an example for a goal…an experience.
I disagree, because he is still the same man, whatever happens to him even if he changed. If he goes to the river on Monday and swims and comes back the following Monday and swims again he is still the the same man, isn’t he? The river might be going faster but it is the same river at heart. Overall, I think that the man is paddling in the same river.
I agree because things change but we don’t notice it, people change in their mind because we learn something new every day. He also might of been thinking different things while in the water. His body probably changed, the water also probably changed and the river bed slightly changed. Every one changes and we can’t go back in time.
I agree that it is true because the water that you step in the first time will be in the sea by the second time you step in the river. So new water will arrive, as time passes we change so we’re different. “All things must change”.
I think that you cannot step in the same river twice, for example:
A man steps in the River Thames then goes out for lunch, meanwhile, the part of the river that the man stepped in has floated off downstream. After his lunch the man steps back in the river, only it’s not the same part of the river for the part of the river that the man stepped in before has floated away!
You can be the same person but because you have had new experiences that makes you a bit different. You have learned new things, had new conversations and for example if you were invited to someone’s party after stepping in the river the first time, you may be feeling excited and different when you step in it again.
This comment may have got you confused ,but hopefully we will talk about it in class.
Caitlin
I agree because you only have a 0.0001 chance of stepping in the same river.
I dont think a guy can cross the same river twice because he isn’t the same guy and it isn’t the same river.
Same river
I agree because its not exactly the same river because all the tributaries are flowing into the river making it different, but on the other hand the river may be a tributary and is made from natural courses and would be the same river.
Same man
The man is not the same because people grow everyday, so you’re never the same person in age.
I agree because you’re not exactly the same man when you come back to the river as you got older. The river isn’t the same aswell. For example the Thames. You step in and the same river is further down. Do you agree?
The man is different because time has passed and the river is different as like time it flows. Without the water, there is no river just a massive hole and without the hole in the ground to keep the water within its banks, there is no river just a big puddle.
I agree because if the river flows away and another part of water from another river comes, it is still not the same river, but same name where the river is.
Well it depends what part of the river your talking about because the body of the river (the path the water is flowing on) is always the same shape and size, but the water alway changes. So if it was saying about the water then yes “no man can ever step in the same river twice”. If you’re talking about the body of the river, yes because it’s the same body. 🙂 🙁
I think that its true that you can’t step in the same river because that you are not the same person.
