We have just returned from such a fabulous trip at from Dr. Barnado’s first Ragged School in Mile End. The children all wore costumes and we travelled there by tube. When we arrived we made our way into the Victorian classroom and were greeted by Miss Perkins. She ran a very strict class and set activities true to the Victorian era. The children took part in handwriting exercises and simple arithmetic using their chalk boards. Also lots of chanting of the timetables and reciting poetry. The behaviour was exceptional as Miss Perkins strict standards enforced order in the classroom. We also learnt about the history of the building and how being situated next to the canal gave transport links to this warehouse. A wonderful day out which has really captured the children’s imaginations.
