We visited the Ghanaian sculptor, El Anatsui’s stunning installations called ‘Behind the Red Moon’ in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern. We learnt that El Anatsui loves to use recycled materials and is interested in history, particularly the period of history when enslaved people were taken from Africa. We decided that it was amazing that artists like El Anatsui say so much through their art and help us talk and learn about important chapters of history.
There were 3 parts; Act I ‘The Red Moon’, Act II ‘The World and Act III ‘The Wall’. We thought about two questions: what did that pieces remind us of and what materials were used to make them. We then made sketches of the installations and wrote about how they made us feel.
