The Tufnell Park workhouse returned to EP yesterday! Matron McCormack, Matron Stansfield, and Matron Collette set the children straight to work in their new workhouse classroom. They discovered about some of the punishing tasks that workhouse inmates were required to do and about how long they had to do them for. In silence and under very strict supervision, the children picked oakum into single threads, washed the laundry by hand using carbolic soap, and made some tasty gruel which was sampled after their work was done. This gave us a real taste of what it was like to be in a workhouse and inspired us to write diaries about our experience.
