We were lucky enough to win tickets to go and see War Horse at the National Theatre! It was an amazing experience. Alongside a brilliant drama workshop with an ex-cast member, we linked our learning to our school assembles about the Armistice and our whole class reading of Michael Morpurgo’s gripping novel.
Here are our reviews of this breathtaking performance. We hope you enjoy them!
Miss T and Year 6
The play was absolutely breath-taking.
It’s about a young boy named Albert who loves a horse, Joey, with all his heart. So when WW1 starts and Joey gets called out to work with the Cavalry horses, Albert eventually runs away to join the army. The main story follows Albert’s desperate search for his beloved horse in the passionate turmoil of the war.
I really enjoyed this production because the acting and the puppets were so impressive. All the horses were crafted out of metal framework and were worked by stagehands. The character and emotion put into the expression of these puppets really made the scene come alive. The sound effects were really effective, and funny sketches (including a goose which kept running into the door) were hilarious.
Altogether, I think that this was an excellently made production and I would definitely recommend to others.
War Horse is a book by Michael Morpurgo, about a horse called Joey, and a boy called Albert. But then this lovely, powerful horse is taken away for the World War 1, as a cavalry horse. The National Theatre has taken this wonderful book, and adapted it into a play, generally for adults, but produced also for children (Year 6).
It is definitely worth seeing, and is incredibly exciting. There are some gunshots, and swearing, but these are all just to set the scene of how horrible life in WW1 really was.
This a play, about a boy called Albert and his horse called Joey. This play is very entertaining. The puppets are very realistic and the massive tank was very cool and the people who manoeuvered the horses made all of the horses sounds by themselves without any speakers doing it! This production should be very successful and is definitely worth seeing, because of 1. the cast, and 2. every thing is life-like. I rate this 10 out of 10.
War Horse is a play about a 16 year old boy called Albert and his horse Joey. Joey goes to war and Albert tries to find him. There were fantastic puppets and great acting. The gunshots were surprising. It was really great and I would recommend watching it and reading the book. It was on at the National Theatre.
I liked this play because it was very realistic and it was about a horse called Joey who went to war and his owner Albert Narracott. The puppets were good because they were realistic.
Year 6 from E.P went to see War Horse (it was about the war) at the National Theatre on Wednesday 21st November 2018. War horse is a play which follows a horse called Joey and a young boy (16) called Albert who lost Joey in war.
I thought War Horse was produced amazingly with peculiar puppets, amazing actors and brilliant backgrounds. Everyone laughed when they were supposed to and cried when something bad happened so I would definitely rate it 11/10 (it was that amazing.)
If you have the slightest chance to see it than you definitely do so. WATCH THIS SHOW.

Yesterday, Year 6 of Eleanor Palmer visited the National Theatre and watched War Horse at the Lyttleton theatre. It was an amazing experience and very moving. The puppets of Joey and the other animals were immensely impressive and are quite extraordinary. The play follows Joey, a mix of thoroughbred and draft, and his loving human companion, Albert, a humble farm boy. When Joey gets sold to the army by Albert’s father, Albert is determined to find him and joins the army in WW1…
War horse is a play about 2 main characters, a horse named Joey and a boy named Albert. Albert’s father Ted Narracott bid on a horse (who was Joey) at the trade market, when he was supposed to get a cow and mortgage but instead he came back with a horse half thoroughbred half draft for 39 guineas.
When Ted came home to the farm, his wife Rose and son Albert realized that Ted made a stupid mistake. Ted only bid on Joey because his brother did. Albert warms up to Joey, but then Ted bets with his brother that in a week Joey can learn to plough. And now Joey has to work on becoming a horse that can plough. Later on Joey goes on to war because Ted sold him for £100. Albert joins the army to find his horse but doesn’t at the start but later on he finds him.
I would recommend this play because it has a lot of action and if you love horses then you will enjoy it!
I loved this play so much. The horses looked so real because of the way they moved and the noises the actors made with their mouths for all the different animals. The main characters were Joey the horse and Albert. There sad parts and happy parts. It is an incredible play and definitely worth watching.
We went to see a play called War Horse. This play was about a horse called Joey that got sold to the army. It was so sad I cried through the whole play! The acting was amazing! Thank you for such an amazing play!

War Horse, which is currently showing at the National Theatre, is a wonderfully exciting and gripping performance. It begins in Devon at an auction, where a half-thoroughbred horse is the prize for the highest bidder. A fierce battle between the Naracott brothers results in drunken Ted Naracott winning the horse for 39 guineas (which was supposed to be the mortgage money), and a strong bond forming between the horse (Joey) and Ted’s son (Albert). When Joey is sold to the army, at the beginning of World War One, Albert does everything he can to get him back again.
This play was pulled off delightfully; the puppets were so life-like and well-synchronised! I would highly recommend it to any fans of Michael Morpurgo: you will never have seen better.
On the 21st of November, we went to War Horse, a show that’s about the war in the National Theatre! There were life size horses, goose, raven and even human puppets that looked so realistic, it even looked real. It was a really sad show because the horses die and same with the humans from guns that shocked you so much! There were humongous tanks that also looked really realistic and were really emotional. I really enjoyed it!
Yesterday we went to see a play called War horse at the National Theatre. The play is about a horse called Joey and a teenager called Albert Narracott. Joey the horse was a puppet and there were lots of other puppets like other horses, bird and a goose. It was very dramatic and sometimes funny. The play was based on Joey and Albert. Joey was sold to the English army, and Albert went to war to find him. In the end Albert found him.
Introduction
We went at 12:30 to go to see the play War Horse. We got a train for 20 minutes. We were all really excited. We went to the National Theatre. Some characters are: Joey (who was a horse) and Ted (the dad). The play was really good.
What happened in the play?
At the very start there was a young man, a dad, a mum and a horse called Joey. Joey soled the English where the person died and they sold him to the German.
We went to see a play called War Horse. It was about a boy called Albert and his horse Joey who later on in the play gets sold to the army by Albert’s father without him knowing. Later on Albert moves to a different village and faked his age to find Joey in the war. The acting was brilliant and was quite emotional at points and the puppets were some of the best I had ever seen. The play was written by the famous author Michael Morpurgo and was originally a book.
22. 11. 18 War horse
We went to see war horse as a class (as year6).It was so much fun, it was a very moving and a bit scary. It was like there were real horses on the stage. I think it is the best thing I have ever seen in my life. I wish I could see it all over again. It was his how the horses grew older as the play went on and so did the characters in it.
The horses are such majestic creatures, and the goose is funny. War Horse is very sad at points in it when one of the horses gets killed to be put out of its misery .The war horses gallop like they are alive and full of wonder. This book was made and written by Michael Morpurgo and is still amazing to this day I so recommend this play because it’s very moving especially exciting.
The story is about Albert – a young boy with a father and a mother living on a normal farm but one long night ago their father gets drunk and buys a horse for 39 guineas instead of using the money to buy a mortgage. Albert falls in love with the horse so when he went to war Albert fakes his age to go into war. Will he survive? This is the best play I have ever watched!
Yesterday we went to see War Horse. The theatre was called the National Theatre. We left at twelve thirty when we went got to the theatre. The story was about a boy and a horse the boy’s name was called Albert and the horse’s name was called Joey and the play was based on World War 1. Like what happened in the olden days. The war was a bit crazy but I really enjoyed the War Horse story. The gun shots were scary but the swearing was a bit funny! The horse was really good – the horse looked real but they were actually puppets. There different animals I think there was a duck, too. The story was a bit sad as well because some people died in the war.
War Horse Review
Yesterday E.P. Y6 went to a play at the National Theatre called War Horse. It was a play about a horse and his boy, in an old town in Devon. A drunken man called Tim Narracott, who stupidly buys a straggly old colt for 39 guineas! (Approx. £52)! Then his son, Albert Narracott, takes the foal under his wing and he grows into a fine old thoroughbred. He names him Joey. Then, his father goes and makes another stupid bet for the price of the horse that Joey can’t train Joey to be a farm horse within a week. Eventually, they won the bet through hard work and trust. Then Joey had to go to war because World War One had broken out just then. Albert was heartbroken and determined to go to war and be with Joey, but he was too young. After a long toil through merciless war and gunfire and blood, they finally got to be with each other again. So, like any good play, it ended with a happy ending. If I had to rate it, it would definitely be 5 stars, no question. If you a chance to see it, you should absolutely take that opportunity.
We went on a trip yesterday to see a play called war horse it is about a boy called Joey and his owner Albert but when the army takes Joey it breaks Albert and Joey’s bond while Albert is home stressing about Joey’s health. Joey himself is experiencing the calamity of war and how families are split and the amount of death and sadness and misery of it then Albert goes to war, finds Joey and is reunited with his family. It was an excellent play. You really get a feel for the horses and Albert himself. It also is very realistic as well and you feel like you are part of the show. It’s really very good.
We went to War Horse in the National Theatre. It was about a boy called Albert and his horse Joey .Joey gets sold and Albert goes to war to find Joey it is a good show my favourite bit was the puppets .
War Horse
War Horse was originally the book written by the famous author Michael Morpurgo. It’s about a horse who is bought by a man who is a father. The father is of Albert, who is 16. He then meets the horse his father has, and calls it Joey. He is with the horse for a long time, but his father makes a bet with some others that if Joey can pull a wagon to a bucket of food he gets 39 guineas (money).
He wins the bet, but one day sells Joey to the army for £100 (guineas). Albert lies about being 16 to join the army to get his horse back. That was the play that we (Year Six) watched, described in lots of details. It was originally a book, so there were characters in that book that weren’t in the play, like Zoey. I would rate it 10\10 because the puppet horses in the play were very good and it’s set in World War 1!
Our class went to see a play called War Horse in the National Theatre. It is about a horse called Joey and a boy called Albert. Albert’s dad had 39 guineas he was supposed to spend on the mortgage but he had drunk a lot of beer that day so instead he bought a fine stallion , that was Joey. He brought it back to his farm and his wife was cross but Albert was happy as can be . Albert and Joey had built a strong relationship.
One day Albert’s Dad did a stupid thing he sold Joey behind Albert’s back for 100 pounds and that’s a lot of money back then. So Albert found out , now Albert want to go to war but he is only 16 years old . So he runs away to go to war , and starts his big adventure of death and blood and war and sorrow .

War Horse is a play involving Joey the horse and his best friend Albert his owner. Albert’s dad sold Joey to the army Albert was heartbroken and he ran away to the army, but had to pretend he was older, so he could search for Joey. It was a story about the war. With guns and a General who didn’t want to use machine guns. It was amazing and emotional, I LOVED it. My favourite character was the Duke, he was so funny. It was so realistic. They use puppets and dummies, it was so, so, so realistic, and it was great. I seriously recommend this play.
We went to see a play called War Horse , It was about a boy called Albert whose dad bought a horse instead of paying the mortgage . When the war started Albert’s dad sold the horse to the army. Albert was so devastated that he ran away, lied about his age and joined the army to track down Joey .
The horses were puppets but after a while they seemed so real .It was a really .great production , it was amazing I loved it.
War Horse Review
We went to see a play called War Horse – it was about a boy called Albert and his dad bought a horse when he was meant to buy a cow and the mortgage, then he did a bet with his brother.
His son had a week to train the horse, so trained it but it was really hard because it was a hunter horse so it had to learn how to plough a farm. So he did it then the horse had to go to fight in the war so the army went but Albert didn’t want to go then Albert lied for his age to join the army. So he did and then he saw his horse in the first time in four years.
We went on a trip to the theatre to watch a play called War Horse. It was all to do with World War 1. It was about a horse called Joey and a boy called Albert . Albert’s father bought the horse for 39 guineas and that was the most out of them all. So Albert’s father tried to train the horse because it was going to war ( World War 1). Germany v England.
As Albert’s father sold the horse to the soldiers for 39 guineas, so Albert trained the horse for a week to teach it to plough. Before war there were some scary bits where they got the guns out and made really loud noises like BANG.
There were some really sad bits when one of the horses got stabbed in the head by one of the Germans. All the horses were made out of brilliant puppets and some really creepy human dummies. The play was really lovely and brilliant I loved it so much and the people that acted it out ( especially the people that held the horses up). This play was amazing – I would recommend it. It was mainly about a boy called Albert and he loves this horse called Joey.
Fantastic reviews Year 6! They definitely make me want to see War Horse. It sounds as if you were totally transported into the world Michael Morpurgo created, so realistically brought to life by the actors and puppeteers. Are you passing on your reviews to The National Theatre?
I was very lucky that I got chosen, as someone was off sick in Year 6. I was amazed to see all the soldiers singing. The gun shots were so loud. The horses looked so real. This was my first time visiting a live performance. The performance made me laugh but sometimes it was sad. I will never forget this. I was surprised by the special effects. The second part was more exciting. This will stay in my memory forever.
Wow, what excellent reviews! This has really made me want to go and see the play too, so I hope that I can get tickets. Did you know that people wear purple poppies to remember the animals lost in war? Well done for all of your hard work!
These reviews are thrilling! So eloquently written and from what it sounds like, this was a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in arts and culture.
On Wednesday 21/11/18 I saw the play Warhorse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, at the National Theatre. It was set during World War I and it was about a horse called Joey who is taken away and sent off to war in France. The plot follows his owner Albert trying desperately to find him. It was amazing, dramatic and both heartwarming and heartbreaking. There were actors and loads of life-like and often huge puppets and they were magnificent! There were geese, horses and even swallows – it was truly incredible how they were controlled and how it added to the emotional telling of the story. I thoroughly recommend you go and see it if you can get tickets!
Wow year 6! I’m so glad you enjoyed the play as much as I did and I feel like your excellent reviews have really done it justice. Such a pleasure to read!
