Our new topic is BIRDS and we have a whole term to learn all about our feathered friends. Mr. Cairns and I need some help deciding what to teach and we want YOUR help. What do you already know about birds and what would you like to find out? Are there any birds you are particularly interested in? Let us know by posting on this blog!
Chicks are so cute when they hatch from their egg. My favourite bird is a parrot because they copy what you say.
Some birds can glide, others can’t fly, birds feathers keep them warm, some birds can swim like penguins. Some dinosaurs evolved into birds long long time ago.
Ducks can fly and swim, some birds have, feather, wings and lay eggs.
I want to find out what bird can fly the fastest in the world.
I would like to learn about pigeon because you can see them quite a lot on the street. I like them but my mummy hates them because they are dirty.
I know that baby chicks tap their egg-shells to hatch out.
The house sparrow is most common in Briton. I read it from METRO newspaper.
I would like to know about Woodpeckers. Why do they have long beak? and why do they cut holes in trees?
I know that some owls called burrowing owls nest underground in tunnels.
I’m curious to know why golden eagles are called golden eagles and why bats come out at night and not in the day. I would also like to know why swans have massive wings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
I like looking at birds with binoculars.
I would like to learn about pheasants , peacocks and chicks.
The reason is that I recently saw some pheasants when I went to the woods. I saw the peacocks at Powys castle. I touched the peacocks feathers. I would like to learn about chicks because we are getting them.
Birds have hollow bones, so they can fly better. I think there are 1000’s of species of birds in the world, that’s a lot.
I have stroked a falcon at London Zoo, it was on it’s keepers hand eating a dead mouse.
I want to learn more about the lammergeier bearded vulture. I saw it on deadly 60 and it said that it hovers and drops it’s prey to break the bones and release the marrow – Yuck !!
I love birds because they are beautiful even though I know a chicken evolved from a tyrannosaurus Rex . Some birds make nests but not penguins. The daddy looks after the egg. My favourite birds are robins because they have a red breast and are very cheeky. When i was little i was on the heath with my mummy and a robin hopped right in front of us and I said to my mummy ” now I know what God is he’s a robin” I think robins are special. I would like to know how did birds develope from dinosaurs and how they know which way to go when they fly away to another country. My second favourite birds are swallows I had a swallow cake at my party. I love swallows because they are fast and gentle and make beautiful shapes and they come in summer.
the Heath when I was little I saw a robin
I like woodpeckers; I heard one on the heath yesterday. I also like the Mauritian kestrel. It is a bird of prey and it used to be very rare. My Auntie Kirsty worked on the project that saved it! I like birds because they are descended from dinosaurs.
Mario would like to learn more about how birds fly and how they lay eggs. He would love to know more about bluebirds, parrots and tropical birds in general because they are so beautiful.

There’s lots I’d like to find out about birds. Do all birds eat worms? Do all birds have feathers? How do birds build nests? How long does it take for eggs for hatch? Do all birds sing?
I know that all birds have wings, but not all birds can fly. For example, chickens, ostriches and penguins have wings but they can’t fly. Some birds, like peacocks, can fly but not very far. When it gets cold in one country, some birds fly to a warmer country on the other side of the world. When they come back, they can even find their old nest. I would like to find out how they know where to go without a map. All birds hatch from eggs, and have feathers, two feet, and a beak. I’d like to know how a bird uses its wings to fly.
I have 3 pet birds, 2 cockatiels and a conure. When the chicks are in the eggs they tap on the shell to get out. Some birds fly to different countries because it is warmer. Birds like to live in trees and make nests out of feathers and twigs. Magpies like shiny things and like to fill their nests with them. My favourite bird is a cockatoo because they dance and are very funny!
Birds are incredible animals, I want to learn about the fastest bird in the universe. I think that Eagles are the fastest birds in the universe. Eagles eat other smaller animals. Other birds that I want to learn about are Robins. I also want to learn about the Hummingbird as they flap their wings up to a 1000 times a second. I want to learn about Swans as they are the most beautiful birds I’ve ever seen. I fed some in a pond in Hampstead when I was two years old. I think this is a really good topic, I really hope that the eggs hatch. My auntie Nadia has 8 chickens in Saffron Walden where she lives and she gets eggs for breakfast every day.
Wow Year 1, I’m amazed how much you know all ready! Mr. Cairns and I are going to have to do lots of research so we can answer your great questions!
Paige, I wonder if you can share some photos of your birds? Unless you could bring them in…?

Some birds like blackbirds eat worms, penguins eat fish and blue tits eat seeds and nuts. We have blue tits living in our bird box and we feed them.

Some birds glide when they are in the air.
Some birds can fly and some birds can’t like Penguins.

Peregrine falcons are the fastest birds in the world. I would like to learn more about peregrine falcons. How many years do they live for? What parts of the world do they live in? How many eggs do they lay each year? I would also like to learn about bluetits. What does their song sound like and can a human copy it by whistling? Why do bluetits have a bit of blue on them? I also would love to learn about owls. I have found out that birds don’t have teeth. Instead they have gizzards. Alligators and crocodiles also have gizzards even though they aren’t birds.
I want to find out how birds grow their wings, and what colour their bones are. I am wondering if the colour is red, because they are very different to human bones.
I want to know what a Dippers habitat is. I wonder if they live in Asia, Japan or England.
I wonder how a bird goes through a cat’s body when it eats it, some birds eat cats, like vultures! How many people have seen vultures? I wonder if racoons eat birds? Can birds have more than two legs, I’ve seen snakes with two heads!
Do birds keep their eyes open while they sleep?
Some birds can’t fly but they all have wings. All birds are colourful. Birds don’t wee, their wee goes into their poo. Some birds eat worms. Birds don’t have hands.

Some birds fly to different countries in the winter, to find food for their young. When I was in Cyprus, I saw flamingoes on the salt lake which had come from Siberia. They come every year.
Some birds, like penguins, can’t fly.
I would like to learn about robins because they are small and sweet. I saw a robin outside school.
All birds lay eggs. Some birds can’t fly like penguins, chickens and peacocks.
All birds have wings and feathers and come from dinosaurs through evolution.
I would like to learn about falcons. I would like to hold one. My brother William went to Eagle Heights in year one and we have a photograph of him holding a bird of prey.
I want to learn about Robins because they are my favourite birds.
Why do they have red tummies?
Why are they so small?
You often see them on Christmas cards.
Robins have beautiful songs.
I know that birds drop nuts so cars smash them. I’d like to know why do birds make nests?
