I rushed urgently into the familiar living room to see my family was sitting absolutely rigidly. Suspense was lingering in the air. Father lent forward to turn the knob on the wireless. It crackled and spluttered into action. The regretful voice of Neville Chamberlain boomed out of the radio telling us that we were at war with Germany. That was the last thing I heard because I burst into tears. Will father have to fight? What will happen to Maggie and I? Will we be bombed by the Germans air forces? What will happen to me if I survive this?
As we all sat down at the wireless eagerness to find out the news I had a feeling that I knew what we were just about to hear. My dad leaned out to turn on the wireless, it was 11:30 in the morning. I heard Neville Chamberlain’s voice and the only words that I could make out were; we are going to war with Germany. I am only 10. I went into my bedroom and locked the door. What was to happen to us? Would my dad have to fight in the war? I am going to die. HELP!
I laid my head on the sofa ledge, wondering what would happen. My Mother turned the button of the wireless and we could slowly hear the crackle of Neville Chamberlains voice. I ignored most of his speech until I heard this……. “This country is at war with Germany.” I saw the gloom on everyone’s faces but Father stayed quiet with a blank face. I looked at Mother but all she said was everything was going to be alright.
I’m in my room now trying to get to sleep but i cant, the only thing that remains in my head was we were at war.
As we turned on the wireless, my heart started to pound like a loud drum seat and tears running down my back. Mother was worried, she was worried because father had already died and she thought she was in a dead end. I miss my father but at least he is safe and resting. NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN had declared WAR mother was crying. I was scared. Wondering what will happen tomorrow but at least I am safe.
The next morning mother was gone I heard a knock on I heard the repeating the word war war please save me I am scared.
As we turned on the wireless, I quivered in fright at the words that echoed out. The continuous rumours were true, we were at war, as we spoke. The sky looked dark due to the news, so I ran dead silently up to bed and switched off the lights. I thought about sneaking out of the orphanage but I hesitated. I deliberately stayed awake all night, my brain full of thoughts. In the morning, I got up early and went to the park to calm myself. A few seconds later, I heard a gun shot. It was close. BANG…
Dear Diary,
I woke up with a start. Mother was shouting at me, telling me to come downstairs. My God must’ve been too busy sleeping to realise the time – 11:30 am! Once I had gotten into my clothes, I went down, curious as to what was going to happen. Father immediately turned on the wireless when everyone was in the front room. A man called Neville Chamberlain was speaking; he was giving an EXTREMELY long speech. I was bored out of my mind until I heard the words: “I am terribly sorry to declare, that England is at war.”
Today everybody was in a rush togo to church and then come home again to hear the “BIG news’’ that was being talked about. So when we got back we all rushed into the living room without even talking our coats off. All the family were pushing and shoving to get a seat near the wireless so they could hear better. Mother was fusing about trying to get everyone settled and comfortable. We weren’t really sure what the news would be about but when we heard it, we were all shocked and a deadly silence filled the room.
Me, my older sister Winifred, Mother and Father were all doing something to take our minds of what Neville Chainberlin was about to say on the wireless. Father was making tea and biscuits as a treat for us whilst Mother was rearranging the furniture. My sister was taking my golden blonde hair out of its plaits, after she had washed combed and dried it we heard Mother calling for us. Father had handed us our teas and biscuits. We were ready to turn the wireless on.
We are at war with Germany said the voice of Neville Chainberlin. Evacuate your children immediately.
