We have been learning about the Battle of Britain this week and all about the Supermarine Spitfires! We have read poems, non chronological reports and there is even a story called Tail-End Charlie that you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piMPb2aS6b4
You can chose what text type you would like to write!
The Spitfire speeded across the runway and then had its final touch on the ground before take-off. It zoomed through the air at a high speed and then soared above the clouds.
In the air, the wind whipped in the pilots face. He wondered why everyone got so scared as soon as they saw this beautiful craft. But then his happy days were ruined forever. The sound of a plane took his focus away from daydreaming. At first he thought it was one of his own but then they started shooting. A Spitfire shooting at one of its own? Why?
R .J Mitchell , who died at the age of 42, was the successful designer of the Spitfire. If he had not design the Spitfire we would not have won the Battle of Britain and defiantly would not of won world war 2. R.J Mitchell was born on the 20th of May 1895. The Spitfires flew at record breaking speeds of 606mp and with it’s loading weight as 1967kg making it very agile an increasing it’s manoeuvrability by a a whole lode in battle especially in dog fights.

After the Battle of France ended ,which was on the 25 June 1940, the Nazis took over France. The Britons knew that Hitler would not stop there.
10 July 1940
Operation Sea Lion had begun. The Luftwaffe took off. The Luftwaffe thought they had the upper hand, they were wrong. The RAF were prepared for the germans Dornier Do 17. We had the best aircraft that was in World War 2, the Spitfire. It was designed by R.J Mitchell , though sadly he passed away. They flew in dog fights. We were outnumbered but with much better aircraft we succeeded.
THE SPITFIRE
This amazing vehicle is going to help us fight in our war against Germany and defeat Hitler! The creator of this marvellous invention goes by the name of Reginald Joseph Mitchell. We thank R J Mitchell a lot for all his hard work. On the 5th March we are taking the Spitfire out for a test flight in Eastleigh Aerodrome. You are all welcome to come and watch.
After this has happened we are sure to have many pilots flying these Spitfires. We’re being helped by Henry Royce and Charles Rolls, who together have built the Rolls-Royce engine.
Spitfire
In 1938, Britain’s turning point plane was built. The Spitfire. With a Merlin Rolls Royce engine and specially designed elliptical wings, this aeroplane became the most agile aircraft in the sky. Reginald Joseph Mitchell is the man responsible for this world-renowned war plane. Although it had common camouflage painted across it, the guns were famous for being able to continuously shoot out ammunition. Needing only 310 yards of runway, once the spitfire took off, it could reach speeds up to 594km/h. The Spitfire helped out in the Battle of Britain and without it we may have lost the war.
The Spitfire, that helped win the Battle of Britain, was designed by R.J Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine Aviation Works. Mitchell pushed the Spitfire’s distinctive elliptical wing, lethal machine guns and top speed to the best he could do and that saved them the win of WWII. Sadly, Mitchell passed away of cancer in 1937 and was not able to see his design fly in the war. He had help from help from Henry Royce and Charles Royce who together built the Rolls Royce engine. After he died, his partner Joseph Smith took over as chief designer, overseeing the flaws and developing it more throughout the years.
Reginald Joseph Mitchell is the designer and creator of the legendary Spitfire. Although he did not live in the war he contributed to the future war.
On the 5th March 1936, the first Supermarine Spitfire (model K54054) took off at Southampton airport. The Rolls Royce Merlin engine meant that it will give the best performance during flight.
When World War two was declared, The spitfire had its chance to help Britain. The Spitfire had a maximum weight of 2630 kg, making it maneuvrable.
Overall, the Spitfire has helped the war effort in Britain. Without her, we could not win WWII.
The Spitfire
This invention broke the record speed of 594mph because of its agileness. Without the Spitfire, we would have lost WW2. On the 5 of march we are going to test it out.
With this we are going to stop the Operation Sea Lion and defend our isle. This amazing vehicle’s designer, R J Mitchell. R J Mitchell passed away in 11th june 1937 before he could see the spitfire in battle. Its was named the Spitfire because the manufacture’s chairman called his daughter his little Spitfire. This vehicle’s proper name it the super-marine Spitfire.
RJ Mitchell, whose successor was called Joseph Smith, was the designer of the Spitfire plane. The plane was known for it’s elliptical wings that allowed the Spitfire to fly with up to 1150 horsepower.
He is best remembered for designing racing seaplanes such as the Supermarine S.6B. RJ Mitchell was born on the 20 May 1895 and died on the 11 June 1937 in Southampton. In 1933, he underwent surgery to treat rectal cancer. He continued to work and earned his pilot’s licence, but in early 1937, he was forced by a recurrence of the cancer to give up work.
The spitfire floated off the runway, into the sky climbing through cloud to cloud. A free feeling rushed throughout the pilot’s mind. The plane glided throughout the sky, leaving a smudge on the clouds. It dived down in a parabola, like a hawk dancing in the sky like a bird. The pilot’s heart rushed down just like his plane moved. He felt the fresh wind flow through his body. A bright light started to emerge, it was a zesty orange and gave you a pain if you looked at it for too long; but some how it was so beautiful.
The Battle of Britain started on the 10th of July 1940, Germany were bombing and attacking the British soldiers and equipment on ground. Britain, however, had the powerful and effective Spitfire plane to protect itself.
The famous design was created by a very smart man called R J Mitchell, who sadly died in 1937 just before it was built and soon after to be used during the Second World War. This camouflage plane could reach its top speed of 594km/h. Its wingspan was 11m, and the engine was made by Rolls Royce.
Today, 47 of these planes are still air worthy.
This plane did an important part in the second world war. The name of this machine is called the Spitfire. The designer, which the name was RJ Mitchell, sadly did not see the plane in action of WWII(at least he saw it in test flight). RJ Mitchell died at the age of 42(58). People thought he was a genius due to of the fact of the elliptical wing and goes over 500mph. This plane did an important part in the Battle of Britain. 20,000 Spitfires were made during the Battle of Britain.

The Spitfire is one of the most formidable planes in history and is a jewel in the skies. Designed by R.J.Mitchell, who died a year after the plane was made in 1938. Its speed came from its springtime flight display and rounded wings, which were shaped like shark fins and were elliptical helping it to swiftly manoeuvre. The plane had a wingspan of 11m. The Supermarine Spitfire was a fighter plane and manly fought in the battle of Britain. Its opposition was the Messerschmitt, the Luftwaffe’s principal fighter plane. Spitfires still cost £800,000 but were priceless in winning the war.
In 1938, the incredible Spitfire was invented. The designer, R.J Mitchell, who was born in 1895 in Staffordshire, named the incepetor aircraft after the Manufacturer’s chairman’s daughter who they called “the little spitfire”. This extraordinary plane was the main front line fighter in world war 2, still widely recognised as a symbol of hope and a saviour to Britain. The excellent design consists of 8 killer machine guns, each shooting 160 bullets per second which helped drown the German Luftwaffe In conclusion, the Spitfire has amazing agility and superior speed which won WW11.
The renowned spitfire was created in the year 1936 which was made by the fenomanel designer RJ Mitchell.
Rj Mitchell was born in 1885 and died in 1937 due to cancer. Before he was part of the supermarine manufacturer group, he made planes for fun. Unfortunately he never saw his creation in action during the Great Battle of Britain.
The Battle of Britain was a big success for the nation and the RAF played a huge role as well as the Spitfire. Although 230 planes were shot down,
the spitfire managed to kill 529 enemy aircraft still being massively outnumbered.
My heart soared over the moon when I had heard that I had got the chance to ride the Supermarine Spitfire. I was actually very lucky, as most of us didn’t get the opportunity, but Captain thought that I was skilled and courageous enough to try. I must admit, I did feel very proud to be chosen to fly one of the most newly created planes ever to be built. There I was, head held high, arms by my side, while others, who were standing in line, were throwing me jealous and dirty looks. I didn’t care. I was ready.
As the trusty spitfire zoomed across the sky I felt worryed.I could not get the thought of me and my plane being boomed out of the sky out of my head. And this was a temporary feeling for most of the soldiers. The spitfire swiftly glided across the sky but the sound of bombs put me of .The cold wind blow though my hair as I heard an arid siren suddenly I felt safer up in the clouds the large spitfire made me feel strong and brave I knew I must do this for my family and friends.
As i soared through the starry night, my heart fluttered as the miraculous Spitfire did a stupendous parabola.
I was lucky to have been chosen to fly the Spitfire, it gave such ease to who ever was in it, unlike the Hurricanes and Flying Fortress, which was a huge advantage to its swift manoeuvrability in the Battle of Britain.
Me and the many who flew this amazing aircraft were a huge part in the war, sadly many went down in combat but will never be forgotten in the name of this triumphant war.
Being one of the first test flight pilots was frankly dangerous you would crash if the new technology broke so I double checked my parachute and watched as the plane came out of the hanger the design was amazing, I knew a good plane when I saw one. There were hundreds of people watching as I sat in the plane once I had the feel of the controls, I gave the signal and started the engine with the roar of a 1,000-horsepower engine I shot down the runway the exhilaration of flight filled me and I was in the air.
As i soared through the starry night my Spitfire did a stupendous parabola into a place few people have ever been.
I was lucky to have been chosen to fly this aviation wonder. The Spitfire was amazing to lots of people including me, even better than the Hurricanes and Flying Fortresses, the Spitfires we flew played a massive part in the Battle of Britain all thanks to the amazing R.J Mitchell.
Me and the many people who flew this plane were a huge part in the war although many of us went down in combat none shall be forgotten in the name of war and are proud country.
The last time the Spitfire flew was in 2001. It was a glorious time almost everyone in Britain watched it fly including the queen and the royal family. It has been in Britain’s history for so long since the 1940s, I think it was the best fighter airplane during that time. Its design was so unique that anyone could spot it from miles away. There are only 40 still air-worthy today. People were so devastated and happy to see the Spitfire’s last flight.
Hope you enjoyed folks goodbye
