This Sunday started like any other Sunday: we went to church, when we came back mother said there was going to be an important announcement coming from the wireless at 11am. When we got back from the church me and my brother and sister started playing war, but we learnt that war wasn’t a game any more…
When it turned five to eleven mother called us into the house. Dad was fiddling with the wireless and after ten minutes of waiting we finally heard it, it was a familiar voice, the voice of the Prime minister Neville Chamberlain.
We had just got back from church and already I knew that something was wrong. Mother and Father had not exchanged a word since yesterday and everyone seemed to be on edge. So, when Mother called me down, I expected the worst. However, nothing could have prepared me for what was about to happen.
As Father fiddled with the knobs, Mother and I sat in silence around the wireless. I tried to pretend nothing strange was happening, but I found myself staring at Mother nonetheless. She caught my eye and I blushed. At that moment, the wireless crackled into life.
A abrupt buzzing noise, like the satisfying sound of pork crackling, erupted from the drawing-room. My ears pricked up, listening to the unusually shrill babble that emanated from the sturdy oak door down the hallway. Reluctantly tearing away from the warm bowls that had once contained a delicious porridge and were not yet washed, I wandered down the cool cornflower-blue tiles to the drawing-room. To my delight and surprise, it was awash with people! Joyce, Audrey, Jamie, and even the grand master were there. But as I leisurely sauntered into the room, I noticed that something just was not right…
Dear diary, today started like any other sunny day until the letter came… I was playing outside like I did every Sunday, but then an ear-piercing scream cut through the air like a knife; instinctively I looked at my little brother, but he was alright so then I knew who it was my mother. I rushed through the back door, and sure enough there was my mother crying on the living room floor. I pondered, why would my mother be like this, then I saw the, it was the governments, suddenly the wireless crackled to life, everything went black. What.
Dear diary,
Today the unexpected happened. A day when the clouds were trying to block the sun. I lay outside, staring into space while John played with toy spitfires making rumbling noises. Mum called us, I picked up John hurrying inside. She beckoned us to the wireless and we sat in trepidation while mum fiddled with the knob. Neville Chambelain spoke with a serious voice. The words “We are at war with Germany” filled my ears. From Mum’s face I could tell that she was repeating his words. John sat oblivious to this breath-taking news. “Mum, what will we do?”
Dear Diary,
We were sitting in the living room listening intently to the wireless as Dad twiddled the knobs and a cracking sound became clear… it was Neville Chamberlain. He started speaking. It was hard to make it out clearly but we could just hear him and we heard the word Germany! Dad turned another knob and it suddenly became clear. I am writing down what he said and I quote: “consequently this country is at war with Germany.”
After that everything went silent and I mean everything! Then out of nowhere I heard a horrible wail. The sound grew. It was what we had been warned about – the air raid siren.
As the wireless crackled into life, the family leaned in closer, to hear the recognizable sound of our prime minister’s voice. None of us children could understand, though it seemed that both mother, father and Aunt Bethany understood perfectly. But we kept on listening until we heard the devastating words which would change my life forever…
The whole family went crazy. Mother started crying, and Aunt Bethany started whispering comforting words into her ear, although we all knew that there was a tear in aunt Bethany’s eye as well. But what will happen now? I just hope it isn’t too bad…
