I was walking home from school. It was Friday and I was excited because there was a party at my house. Suddenly, I tripped on a piece of eroded rock. I carried on walking and saw a similar piece of rock. I picked it up and studied it. It wasn’t just a piece of rock. It was a swirly pattern set in the stone. I guessed it was a fossil and ran home excitedly to show my mum. I burst through the door and ran to her room. Empty. I ran to the kitchen. Empty.
“Mum!!! Where are you!”
“Here darling! I’m in the sitting room.”
I ran and showed her the fossil.
She stared at it and all she said was, “That’s very nice.”
Fossils are ancient animals and plant that have been set in stone. Fossils are made when an animals dies and sediment, mud and clay builds up on them and hardens into stone. Fossils can be dated at the time they died using carbon dating by measuring the rate carbon decays and then seeing how much carbon has decayed in the fossil. Fossils can tell us lots about ancient creatures, like what they looked like, how they lived and what they were. Also fossils don’t have to be dead animals because there could be footprints or signs of feeding or breeding.
It looked like a statue but I knew it wasn’t. It in fact was the Devil’s Thief Orag, The Swift. It had been set in stone for over 100,000 years. He is older than the earth itself. He has nearly awoken from his punishment. Nothing in this world will stop his wrath. That is why I am not from this planet. I am the eternal saviour. I am the bringer of salvation. I am the judge, jury and executioner. My powers are stronger than ever before. I can imprison him for another 100,000 years. Who am I? I am Death.
All was silent. Jake was creeping down the stairs, avoiding the creaky boards. His mother was fast asleep, unknowing of what Jake was doing. He opened the door and stepped carefully outside. It was a cold night, and no one was around. He knew exactly where he was going. To the small graveyard round the corner. His grandma had died that week. So he was now going to see the grave. He entered the graveyard with a freezing chill creeping slowly up his spine. He found the grave his grandma was under. Then he noticed something. The letters were moving.
This was it. I’ve been waiting for this for years and finally it has happened to me. Months and months of telling people that I will find a fossil and I will show, but of course they wouldn’t believe me. Everyone said that you can find one at the beach, but I wasn’t at the beach or my house or my nan’s. I was on my way to go to the forest and felt something on the floor that I stepped on. Luckily it didn’t break ( even though I didn’t step on it very hard.) I picked it up, based on what I saw it was a trace fossil… of a starfish. I thought it was nothing, but it wasn’t. The next day I went to school and showed everyone, then they did something that I’ve never seen before… a smile that says ‘I’m your friend now’. Then I was somebody… a person.
I raised my hand; the shadows of the room engulfed me. I didn’t know why I was doing this; but at the same time I did. I was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. I had magic already but they had made my powers seem minute. They were a master race. A race of gods. I didn’t know who I was killing and I didn’t want to; I clicked my fingers, a flame erupted and instinctively my hand shot down- my victim was dead. My veins turned black and I knew I was one of them, reincarnated… Forever set in stone…
A Faceless One.
Many years ago there was man that in all ways stood out, not by his face or what he looked like, yet he stood out. At university no one liked him; he was just a boy with spots, geeky glasses, braces. Til one day he figured out that he was not just a boy, but a super boy!!! He got older, not any younger; he went to a secret lab where he got his DNA taken so they could find out more. He was on his last legs, nearly about to die. Suddenly the evil turned up and froze him solid…
It was a lovely day. The sun beamed down upon all, feeding souls, lightening spirits, not a cloud in their minds, or sky. Yet I felt it. I knew, somehow, something bad was going to happen, but, being the unintelligible life force I was, I discarded it. Besides, what could happen on a lovely day like this? Death, destruction, chaos and fear. that’s what. Anyway, I was flying about quite happily until I heard a deafening crash and a devil’s roar. Every instinct I had rippled onto red alert as the blood curdling roar hit me. And then I saw him. A struggling freak of nature, stuck in a gigantic meteor, set in stone… And breaking free…
come and sing with me
tell me truths to set me free
and calm the speeding of my heart
show me the light hidden in the dark
each path we take, in the end we go alone
nothing is solid, nothing set in stone
at any point we can change, we can grow
find the beauty and peace in all we know
but for now I need this, human connection
until I find my way, my ultimate direction
for the friend I need you to be
is the one who finds the good in me
doesn’t care if i’m wrong or right
and will walk with me through darkest night
because I would do
the same for you

Brilliant explanation, Arnold! We will be learning all about fossils on Monday!

Spine-chilling! To be continued? You’ve left me on the edge of my seat!

Woo, Sawdah! Love the technical vocab – ‘trace fossil’!

I love the suspense you built in this, Eugene! A real skill in such a short amount of text.

Great, Esme! Was this inspired by our superhero biographies?
