One chilly autumn day Graypaw, who was a sleek, gray-striped cat, was lying on the bank of a meandering river. Suddenly several cats came through a bush and surprised him. He jumped back alarmed and ran swiftly to the camp, and warned Bluestar they were coming. Bluestar sent a patrol to warn them off.
After the battle Bluestar called him to the front to say this: “Graypaw, do you accept the responsibility of protecting your clan even at the risk of your life?”
“ I do.”
“Then let Starclan grant you from this day on the name Graystripe.”
1. A river starts by rain falling into the earth. Most of it stays underground but a bit comes to the surface and starts a river.
2. Tributaries (little streams that join the river) join the river and widens it in length and width.
3. There are bits of land called floodplains which are in danger of flooding with water.
4. There is also a thing called a meander which is a bend in a river. After time, the river floods on the side where the meander starts so an object doesn’t have to travel along the bend (meander) which turns into an Ox-Bow lake when the meander dries up.
From source to mouth
The river flows
From north to south
The river goes
Meandering from left to right
Everyday and every-night.
Across it went a little boat
It hardly could stay afloat
As it dwindled through the raging river
The boat man said “Let’s not dither!”
From source to mouth
The river flows
From north to south
The river goes
Meandering from left to right
Everyday and every-night.
Through the dense Forest and undergrowth
Carried on that little boat
Determined it would never stop
The boat heard a giant plop!
At long last they have arrived
And now live by the riverside!
Rivers, why are they so, great? How big they are…amazing! Now come close, here’s a little story about rivers.
It was a bright sunny day and a girl with her father were walking by. The girl loved rivers. All she ever talked about was rivers, and she always dreamed that she will see one one day. Then later that day her mum and her went shopping. The girl seemed surprised because they never went this way to go shopping. As they came closer to somewhere where the girl never went she saw……… A RIVER!!! The best she had ever seen, she loved it.
Did you know that the Amazon River is the second biggest river in the world? The biggest river in the world is the river Nile in Africa. In fact, the Amazon River carries the most water in the world. In dry season the Amazon River is one-six miles wide, but during flooding season, some people say that it can get to about twenty miles wide. The average depth is forty metres. The Amazon River is located in South America. It runs through Guyana, Ecuador, and Bolivia etc. The Anaconda snake is found in the shallow waters in the Amazon basin.
“You go first” encouraged Toby.
“No you go first” urged Ron.
The two brothers were on a dare to spend a night in the haunted house in the woods. The door was hanging off its hinges and all the windows were smashed. Ron took a coin from his pocket and threw it in the air “heads I go, tails you go” he stated to Toby.
Ron’s smile dropped off his face as the coin fell to the ground landing on heads. He looked back towards the river, before his eyes flew the ghost of river view cottage……
In the summer holidays we live in France. We stay in a house in a village called Ansac sur Vienne. There is a large river that runs through the village and that river is called the Vienne. Two walk by the river on the main road on the left of the river. Three to walk down a country lane on the right of the river. Which side would you choose – left, right or middle?

I got to the river heart racing, the water was fast flowing and rough. It was very far to the other side but it was either swim across or face the soldiers. So I took of my shoes, closed my eyes and terrified plunged into the ice cold torrent. My head broke the surface, gasping for breath I looked back, the river had already swept me far from where I had jumped in. Panting, I slowly started to struggle against the ever roaring gush of cold water obscuring my vision.
It was summer and we were all in France. We had Just gotten out of the river when the girls decided to explore. Me and dad managed to persuade Mum to take Zed. And somehow it worked. Me and Dad were suddenly spies in the army. We waded our way through the deep water when we finally found a rock. We lay down to dry when Dad noticed an island. We quickly stripped off our shirts and left our only weapon. The pocket knife. When we reached the island, Dad was in the middle of a wee when I spotted a tourist on a cliff, Just staring down at him. Dad yelled his apology to her and then we went back, Laughing our heads off…

Lovely writing this week Year 5, I am so impressed by the diversity of responses to such a simple prompt – river. I loved poems from those such as Luc and Freya, and non-fiction comments from those such as Callum and Esme (just to name a few…) I look forward to reading next week’s responses…

The Rushing River
See the river as it meanders down the valley,
Wearing away the land, it can do whatever it pleases
Rushing, rushing, we’re running out of time
See the river as it swamps the floodplains,
The birds high enough, way up in the sky
Rushing, rushing, we’re running out of time
I love the way it flows,
Down the way where no one goes
Rushing, rushing, we’re running out of time.
Gently pushing the boats along,
The river is our soul provider
Rushing, rushing, we’ve run out of time

The deep, deep river and the lucky, lucky dog
A man fell in the river
His name was Jiggly Jim
He splashed and swallowed water
Because he could not swim.
A girl fell in the river
Her name was Maggie Moat
She splashed and swallowed water
But she could not find a boat.
A boy fell in the river
His name was Robbie Ranch
He splashed and swallowed water
But he could not grab the branch.
A dog fell in the river
And his owner quickly followed
But he did not splash at all
Because the water was all swallowed.
