We kick off Year 6 with our very first 100 Word Challenge! Your task? To write 100 words (no more, no less!) inspired by the prompt of the week. This week’s prompt is inspired by our new topic – Human Planet, but you can interpret the prompt as you wish! We already had some very creative suggestions in class so I can’t wait to read your contributions!
Around the world there are many endangered animals. The one I love the most is the giant panda. Did you know that when baby pandas are born they are as long as a pencil and weigh as much as a bar of soap? Wild pandas only live in central China, apart from when they have been shipped across the sea to live in a zoo. Usually they live longer in captivity than they do in the wild. Scientists think this is because of poachers and lack of nutritious bamboo. The best place to see a panda is at Edinburgh Zoo.
‘Around the world’ is a yo-yo trick with either a responsive or non responsive yo-yo.
You throw down the yo-yo and make it go to sleep (where the yo-yo is still spinning but not climbing back up the string) and then start to swing the yo-yo like a pendulum, gradually increasing its swing until it goes all the way ‘around the world’. To finish up this trick you simply flick your wrist or bind your yo-yo to make it grip the string and it should climb back up the sting to you palm in lightning speed. How cool is that?
Around The World
Save the arctic fox
Norway and Sweden are combining forces to help save the animal called the Arctic fox, which is under big threat from climate change. The foxes are also competing with common red foxes, which are moving north in search of colder climates. It is thought that there are just hundreds left in the wild and falling as we speak. Now Arctic foxes are being put into Dovrefjell National Park in central Norway, where they have not been seen for the last 15 years.

Places I’ve been to:
USA
The longest river in USA is the Mississippi which is 3,734 km! There are 50 states in America. The most recent state to join was Hawaii which joined in 1959. Alaska is the state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work!
Austria
Austria is bordered by 8 countries: Germany , Czech Republic , Switzerland , Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Italy , Hungary and Slovakia. Wiener schnitzel is a typical Austrian dish and the dessert “Strudel” or “Apfelstrudel” (filled with apple) was created in Austria
These are the main places I’ve visited in my life!
Problems
There are so many issues around the world
And I want to mention one,
The Syrian refugee crisis
And what should be done.
If all the rich countries sent ten boats each
They’d pick up those stranded on the beach
If they all sent ten buses for the homeless load
Wouldn’t that save all the people on the road?
We all have a problem-
To give them a life
We all really need to
Save them from the strife
Away from the trouble
Of their home land,
Away from the tarmac
Away from the sand
In an ideal world
I love it!!!
Once a young man who had just graduated from university read about Phileas Fogg (the man who traveled around the world in 80 days). The young man, called Ben, thought he could do it in 30 days. So when he had finished packing he got the train around Europe on a tour. Then Asia, Australia, Antarctica, Africa, South America and North America. Then he traveled home. When Ben got home after 30 days everyone congratulated him and asked about his trip and Ben made history. The press interviewed him and photographed him and put him on the front cover.
“Around the world; they were circling around the world for 10 years, just hovering, and then they landed. Millions of them, zombies – no, aliens. They infested every continent. They started in Australia, then Europe, then moved on to Africa, then Asia, Antarctica, North America, and finally South America. They covered all this land in one day. Wherever they went, they left no survivors. They took over Earth and they changed it. Soon all was gone and there was nothing, except rubble and them. How do I know? Because I am one of them. In fact, I am their leader.”
Human Planet
70% of the worlds surface is water!
Tropical rainforests only cover 2% of the world but are home to half of its species!
In Brazil, certain tribes use blowpipes to kill there prey.
In just 50 years, half the plants tropical forest have been cleared and 100 species been made extinct each day.
The Himalayan mountains are home to 70 million people!
Wheat covers 600 million acres of land around the world twice the size of Alaska!
300 million people live in deserts around the world!
Over 1 third of humans lives within 100 km of oceanic coast.
Known as ‘the man who discovered America’, Columbus was trying to find a westward sea passage to the east when he landed in the New World in 1492. This unplanned discovery changed the history of the world.
Christopher was born in Italy in 1451. As a teenager, Christopher went to sea and travelled a lot. In 1492, Columbus and his fleet set sail across the Atlantic.
He first landed in the Bahamas. It wasn’t until his third voyage that he discovered mainland America. Columbus did not ‘discover’ America. There were many people already there. He died on 20 May 1506.
Our planet is made up of land and water. The land ranges from icy to wet, tropics to deserts. There are 7 continents – Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, South America, Africa and Antarctica. This planet would never be complete without its water. Did you know that the surface of the earth is approximately 71% water? This is mainly made up of our 5 oceans – The Pacific, Southern, Arctic, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Oceans are made up of seas and there are inland seas too. The two biggest threats facing our planet today are i) climate change and ii) the massively increasing population. (100 words)
There once lived a man called Cristiano Ronaldo, from Portugal, who originally lived in the UK and always wanted to go around the world every single day. He would want to go football matches for his football team Man United Academy to play football and be a professional footballer like Eric Cantona used to be.
One day Cristiano Ronaldo went to Man United Academy and he was told that he would be able to go Sweden and play versus AIK Academy FC . He was so amazed . He also learned a football trick called Around the World.

THE END
The dolphin had grown bored of life in the clear, aqua sea so he swam away from the family noise. He swam until the sea was cold and unwelcoming. In front of him was an eerie shipwreck lying on its side. Pressing his snout up against a cracked porthole he saw the looted ship now alive only with sea creatures. He sadly shook his head and swam on toward a colourful coral reef. The dolphin marveled at the sunlight, gaped at the coral and heard something in the wind. Perhaps it was his family whispering him to come home?
2,600km of coral hugging Australia’s east coast. From Bundaberg in the south to beyond Cape York. Simply the biggest reef in the world. It has options for all: novice drivers can learn in safe waters, yet still see plenty of the reef’s 1,500 fish species during lessons. More experienced divers should sail to the outer reef for pristine coral gardens.
Oxford Street Day
Many people rushing by
To and from the shops
Swinging their bags up and down
This the world we live in, this is our town
10 seconds to cross
Buses are shouting they are very cross
Many people standing by
Looking at the shops
Up and down their bags swing, they will never stop
This the world we live in, this is our town
5 seconds to cross
Buzzing around like a swarm of bees.
Many people leaving now
Going from the shops
Dragging their bags along
This the world we live in, this is our town
Jack liked to sail, and he was very good at it. He sailed in all sorts of places like the Mediterranean sea. One day he decided to sail across the Atlantic and through the Pacific and end up on the east side of Britain. His boat was named Sea Hawk and had just got ready for the long voyage west.
He cruised out of Plymouth heading north west towards Canada for a resupply stop. Land was disappearing behind him and he was getting into deeper water. Suddenly a Thresher shark leaped over the boat knocking him out with its tail.

I am writing about fishing because I have been fishing before. Fishing is a lot of fun to do. Some people do it as a sport it might be for the biggest fish or the most fish. Some people go fishing to calm them selves down. Some people go fishing to sell their fish there. Some people show their skill to prove they are the best fishing man or woman. Lots of people go fishing in lakes, seas, rivers and oceans. If you catch a fish then that’s great for you but if you catch a big fish that’s great.
