A Victorian Christmas involves a new fashion of bringing a tree into the house, sending Christmas cards, and the story of the robin. Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) was German and in Germany had Christmas trees and England didn’t, so Prince Albert introduced it to England. When baby Jesus was born, a robin came in and to keep the baby warm, it flapped its wings so the heating of the fire warmed him. That’s how the robin got a red breast. The first Christmas card was sent by Sir Henry Cole. On it was a banner, family and poor people.
Tom was walking through the park in a storm and noticed that the wind was strong. Without warning a bolt of lightening hit him! When he awoke, he had time travelled to a place that he recognised from a picture on Y3’s class wall! It was dark and people were dressed like Victorians. He noticed a figure moving in the shade of a wall – a murderer about to stab a posh Victorian. Tom hurled a rock at the glinting knife and it flew off into darkness. The same lightening bolt hit him and he awoke dazed in the park.
One morning I woke up in my bed and I found my room very different.
All my toys were rather different. My gigantic hippo was a small wooden doll , my toy rabbit was a pice of bent metal. There was only one thing that was the same and it was my toy seal.
So I got up and found my clothes all ragged and very dirty.
That second my mother came into my room wearing rather long puffy dress all covered with the flour and dirt. She snatched my seal and said: “You should know by now not to play with toys on Sunday except Noah’s ark.”
I was shocked and it took me a while to figure out that I was in the Victorians times.
I got used it a bit. But that night it was so hard to get to sleep.
On Monday it got a lot better I was back in present!
The Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton and Owen Jones. It could fit fully grown trees and over 1000 people went every day. It took 3 whole days to visit it properly!!!! It was burned down in 1851 and in the V&A the ACTUAL plan is still lying there in a glass screen so you can still visit it NOW. It won in a competition so some people started building it. It took 9 months to build (that’s 18 fortnights) gosh that’s a lot of fortnights!!!! It’s got the name Crystal Palace because it’s made out of shiny glass.
Let me tell you about a Victorian school life. At school you would have girls and boys entrances. Girls and boys weren’t allowed to speak to each other in class. The teacher was very very strict. Girls would have easier easier sums than boys. Everyone would have an inspection, a man or woman would come and see the school and test them. The children would use slate boards and slate pencils. At the beginning of the day they would have hand inspections, you would get told off for a cut or scratch. So a Victorian school day is very different than now.

I am William and I own a large textile factory. I have hundreds of children living here. Many of them are orphans (which means they have no parents) and so I take care of them. They start work at five o’clock in the morning and work until eight o’clock at night. But they are so lazy and always have accidents like getting their fingers chopped off or broken. Also, they get sick a lot, they get sore eyes from the cotton dust and have breathing problems. But I am so kind I still feed them and let them sleep on the floor.
My name is Joseph Bazalgette and I was born in 1819. Today it is really smelly, its called the stink of London. Its because everyone puts all the waste and rubbish in the river Thames. Everyone is dying of cholera because of the dirty water. In 1853 – 1854 more than 10,000 Londoners were killed by the disease. My job is chief engineer of London and I want to help the city. I have a new invention that is a new sewage system for London. It is really big, the sewage is taken away in big tunnels to a treatment place where they clean it all up. I am so excited about it and proud of myself.
Crystal palace was built in 1851 to show off all of Britain’s excellent inventions. Joseph Paxton designed it for the great exhibition. It cost 3 guineas to get in, which nowadays is about £275!!! It had one million feet of glass in total, and people were amazed. On the 30th of November 1936 Crystal Palace burnt down, like a mini fire of London. My grandad was six, and he saw it burn down, with one hundred thousand other people! Recently a new plan was announced to re-build something on the site.
When I came back from the Ragged School my slum was quite different. My mean roommate’s dirty bed was completely moved and my ripped toys had vanished. Suddenly I heard a loud knock on the door. I thought for a moment whether or not I should answer it. Finally I made up my mind, slowly opened the door and Joseph Bazalgette appeared and said, “At last, Oliver, you’re here. I’ve been looking for you. Sorry I messed up your room. I need you to help me with my new project, making sewers!” My jaw dropped. “Ok,” I stammered, “let’s go.”
‘Hey that’s me’ thought Tom Davis as he looked at a Wanted Poster. ‘I need to tell the gang’. Tom walked down a dusty street, there were rats crawling everywhere and a smell of manure was in the air. He walked with his cap covering his eyes so that nobody could see his true identity. He walked up a set of creaky stairs and into his base. Tom’s gang were sitting playing ‘pick-a-pocket’ a game which helped them to be better at pick pocketing. ‘Guys we have to move base quickly, the peelers are on to us!’ Tom shouted loudly.
A Poor Victorian Family Life.
Once in old London there was a dingy slum were one family lived in. There were six children sharing a small attic to sleep in. The six children were called Annabel, Elizabeth, Oliver, Henry, Hazel and May. One day, all of the children went to work. Annabel went to a ragged school, Elizabeth stayed at home and did sewing with her Mother, Oliver and Henry went to a workhouse doing factory work and Hazel and May made and sold matchboxes in the market.
I am Tom. I live in Camden. People say there’s a monster they saw. That is just a myth! my mother is dead and so am I – so I am a ghost… I am not a myth! I haunt the owner of the workhouse where me and mother died. We died of cholera, no one helped us. So I am back to scare him by shutting doors and knocking things off his desk. I have made a plan with the workhouse children, we are going to get the workhouse shut down! To be continued…
Year 3, I have loved reading all your 100 word challenge homework! Some really great ideas, so pity it wasn’t a one thousand word challenge! Keep them coming in please…..

Once there was a man who wanted to post his first ever Christmas card. The card had three pictures of beggars and people with glasses of wine, and said ‘A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you’.
The man wrote a message on the card and put it in the post. A few days later it was delivered to the other man who wondered what it was on his mat.
He opened the envelope, looked at the card very carefully and read it. He was so surprised and happy, that from that day on he had a wonderful Christmas.
Long ago there was a boy named Stanley and he had a sister called Nancy. They had lots of fun playing around but also ended up in huge arguments. They had a father called Mr Thompson (their mother died of child birth) as well as a shaggy old cat named Scratch.
One day while Stanley and Nancy were playing in the green fields the clouds curled up together and formed a massive storm. They spotted a black figure with old ragged clothes walking across the distant hill. The kids were very suspicious and walked nearer and nearer to the black figure. Suddenly the black figure turned his head and stared at them mysteriously. The children froze. The black figure kept on walking. Why isn’t the black figure staring at us? Isn’t he curious like us? thought Stanley. Suddenly the black figure pulled out a huge knife dripping with blood and disappeared into a small cottage. Stanley and Nancy ran to the cottage and peeped into the ragged old window. They saw a huge gang of people crowding together and making some type of plan. All of a sudden a man opened the creaking door and poked his head out. Immediately Stanley and Nancy rolled into the cottage and hid behind a wardrobe. They heard all what the people were saying. Quickly they realised that they were…. MURDERERS! Then Nancy had an idea. When the murderers weren’t looking she sneakily grabbed some weapons from the wardrobe. Nancy whispered the plan to Stanley and pointed to a rope leading to a curtain that was over the murderers. She sliced the rope in half and the curtain fell onto the murderers in fast motion. They cut a piece of rope and as fast as they could tangled up their victims. They brought the murderers to their dad and took them to the cop. Stanley and Nancy got rewarded for catching the most terrifying and frightening murderers of all times.
The end!
Chimney sweeping was a job children could do better than adults small boys (5 to 6 years old) would be sent scrambling up inside the chimney to scrape and brush soot away. They came down covered in soot and with bleeding elbows and knees. I have two small boys working for me, after work there arms and legs are bleeding so I rub them with salt-water before I send them up another chimney. The work was dangerous and painful some boys got stuck and died of suffocation. I never got stuck myself but some of my friends have and were taken out dead. Luckily, in 1832 a law forbidden no boys under 12 years old could go up chimneys again!
Today I woke but I felt different. I looked out the window to find my whole street white with snow. On all the doors there were christmas wreaths, suddenly I realised it was Christmas! I was very exited but then I was interrupted by my mother she told me to come to the lounge as quick as possible. So I went down to find my family sitting by the fire at the end of the room stood a christmas tree then we had a big christmas lunch after that we opened presents, they were wonderful…. what a great Christmas Day!
In the Victorian days men and women would travel around the streets of the rich people and sell things like milk, bread, flowers, newspapers, strawberries and vegetables. They would either walk with their baskets or bring a cart for the vegetables and meat and the rich people would call them over if they wanted anything. They sold 2 blooms for one penny, they would go out daily selling things to make a living. Victorians also had window cleaners climb up on to their balconies. they would go out in all weathers for just a few pennies!
This night wen I went to bed, I had a dream….
I have dream with a chocolate factory. The factory was huge full of sweets all over the place.
I was in heaven…… but then I realize that the workers of the factory were children, let me tell you LOTS of them.
I have spoke with some, and ask why they were there working instead of being at school?
They told me that they had to work to help their family, because they were very poor and they parents could not send them to school.
I felt sorry for them, and I do hope one day they could be able to go to school and have lots of fun.
This story will not be starting in Victorian times. I was very bored so I slumped on my bed. My mum told me to go to the shops so I did, but on my way I saw a Victorian lady. I followed her but then she began to fade so I ran and ran until I was a Victorian girl on the streets. It was Christmas day and a Victorian lady took me into her posh house. The lady said “Oh my, a little girl on the streets on Christmas day!” The lady was called Amelia. Amelia wrapped me up in a pretty dress and the next day I went to school. In school I became one of the naughty girls. I really wanted to tell the class that I had time travelled but I was in detention. Then one day I did something very bad but I just can’t say because I was angry. The next day I was punished. I had to do lots of chores, ,but along the way I met Charles Dickens. He took me to his home and I was amazed at how many children he had. His wife was so lovely. I had some food and when it was time for bed I had to sleep on the streets, but then Amelia came and took me home and we had a lovely Christmas. I had a lovely goose, a lovely tree, and most of all lovely presents. I had so much fun but I didn’t know that Amelia had a boyfriend and he was lovely and we all had the best Christmas ever!!!
James and Connor are slumped by the fire, waiting for their breakfast. Their mother hands them a slice of stale bread. With their rags wrapped tight around them they set off for their five mile walk to school. When they got there the others were crammed in ready to go in.
The teacher slammed on her desk with her cane for the start of class. There was a strange smell and suddenly they heard the cackling of flames. “Fire” shouted an older boy. They fled as the fire followed them through the school. ‘No more school!’ yelled all the boys.
We laughed at Eddy’s – great story! ****
