Year 5 have been busy creating amazing pieces of writing through the 100 Word Challenge. Now it’s Year 3’s turn to have a go!
Each week the 100 Word Challenge website posts a new prompt which could be a picture or a series of individual words. You can then use up to 100 words to write a creative piece based on the prompt.
Here is your first challenge…
You must write a story, or piece of creative writing, which include all of these words…
SUMMER, BLACK, EXPENSIVE, POLAR BEAR, FLYING
These words can be put anywhere in your writing and in any order but they must all be there! Make sure you think carefully about your writing and make it as creative as you can. Post your writing on the Year 3 blog.
Happy writing!
Once there was a polar bear that thought he could fly. So one day, in summer, he bought a pear of very expensive wings. That afternoon he took the wings up to a cliff. In no time he was flying through the air! But then he accidentally hit the sky and fell down into a bag of coal that turned him all black. The next morning his friends came to play with him, but they didn’t recognise him, so they threw him in the sea and gave him a bath!
It was summer, but there was a polar bear on the loose! No one could catch him! Some people said they saw a flying polar bear and some people thought they saw him dance in the street, but most people never saw him at all because it was pitch black. Finally, a scientist caught the polar bear in an expensive cage and took him back to the zoo.

My name is Barry. I am a polar bear. When I was a cub I broke my leg falling onto an iceberg. I went to sleep, and what happens? I float all the way to England!
Big black buildings loomed over me, and men in lab coats ran after me. They took me to a white building and wrapped my sore leg up in bandages. They sent me off on a brilliant silver plane. I LOVED FLYING!
I got home and my family had missed me (but my dad was a bit angry about how expensive the plane ticket was).
My name is Calub, this is my story of how I went from a boy to a superhero.
One summer day when I was walking, I saw a black spaceship flying overhead and then landing. The metal door opened and out stepped a polar bear. He was no ordinary polar bear – he was an alien!
“Friend or foe?” he asked.
“Friend” I croaked. “To prove it – here take my expensive watch”.
“Thank you”, he said. “I have a gift for you too then – a special helmet”.
That is how I gained my special powers.
I am loving reading your writing! Well done to everyone who has posted so far. I can’t wait to read some more..
One day a polar bear was coming out of his expensive house. A little girl was walking down the street.
“What is your name polar bear?” she said.
“My name is Snowy. What is your name?” said Snowy.
“My name is Carly.”
Little did Carly know that Snowy was an ALIEN!!! Carly didn’t know yet but sooner or later she will find out. “Would you like to come for a cup of juice? ”
“Yes”.
When they went home Snowy was changing into a flying black alien. Carly turned around, screamed and ran away as fast as she could.
One summer morning Mary strode out of her garden with her expensive toy polar bear. Suddenly, they felt themselves flying up high and over the sea. They stopped in Antarctica. The polar bear said ‘I’m taking you to meet my king’. The king wore a normal polar bear outfit but with a black cloak. He took the cloak off, revealing a tatoo saying ‘You will have a wish granted’. Mary wished to live for a hundred years! Ninety-nine years later Mary found herself in her garden with her toy polar bear, now rather battered. ‘What an adventure!’ said Mary.
It was a hot summer’s morning. As soon as I woke up, I ran to the window and opened my curtains. Birds were flying and swooping in the sky and the sun was shining. I hugged Diamond, my cuddly polar bear. Today was my birthday party, I was so excited. I put on my new dress and expensive shiny black and gold party shoes and I raced downstairs to the garden to wait for my friends to arrive. As I swung high on the swing I thought what a brilliant day it was going to be.
It was summer in the arctic. Terns were flying over the icebergs. The hunter, with his silent tread, crept over the icy lake in search of his prey. Suddenly, he sighted a lone polar bear striding across the frozen desert. He raised his expensive sniper rifle. “Bang!” went the gun. The shot missed the bear and ricocheted along the ground. The ice shuddered beneath his feet. Soon after a crack appeared. Then he fell through the ice into the black darkness of the freezing water. A helicopter swooped down, lowered a rope to help the man. The bear had gone.
In the Arctic, there lived a polar bear. He always felt different from the other polar bears because he had a black stomach and wanted to fly. He always got teased because of this. When he went to school everyone would move away from him. One summer’s day, he decided to leave the Arctic and go to Scotland where he could buy a hang glider. Finally, he arrived and bought a hang glider even though it was expensive. After a lot of practice, he was flying high and soared back to the Arctic, waving to the other polar bears below.
Many moons ago I was a polar bear.
I was always arguing with my brother bear Rupert.
One summer I got into a fight with him because I support Tottenham and he supports Chelsea, we beat them by one point and won the Cup. In the fight we gave each other black eyes but I sent him flying with a particularly well aimed punch that proved to be expensive, because my mum made me spend my pocket money on a present to cheer him up, and it did…it was a ticket to the World Cup Final. Doh!
On the first night of start of the summer, there was the last polar bear that lived in Antarctica. But there were still some polar bears swimming under the water to get some fish to eat and to survive. These were special flying fish that were the biggest and most expensive because they are as big as a house, and it would need 17 polar bears to get it out of the water. This unique polar bear had no fur which meant he could hunt these fish in the darkness because all polar bears skin is black.
I went into a funky clothes shop and bought a black t-shirt with a polar bear on it. It was terribly expensive, but I didn’t care because it was a steaming hot day in the middle of summer and I needed something cool to wear. I put my t-shirt on and left the store feeling so happy with my new purchase. Then, disaster struck. A bird flying high in the sunny sky, pooped and it landed right in the middle of my polar bear’s head. I was so angry, I shouted and stamped my feet. Then I started to cry.
Each night Max dreams of winning the lottery and going on an expensive Arctic exploration to search for polar bears. Max knows loads of facts about the polar bear. He even told his brothers that polar bears have black skin! The best bit of the dream is staying in a tent and a helicopter flying over to drop supplies. Max’s Mum shouts “Bedtime!” and Max quickly changes into his pyjamas as sleeping is fun when you can dream of being a great explorer.
Once upon a time there was a black polar bear called Sonny. She lived in a igloo which melted every summer. So Sonny bought a very expensive igloo. The igloo was great, until Sonny found out that the igloo was a rip off and it did melt. So Sonny bought a big, brilliant, new igloo. It was even better than the last one. Then Sonny found out that all igloos melt. So Sonny went to London to buy a caravan (polar bears love flying). When Sonny got home she set up her caravan and knew it wouldn’t melt any time soon!
One summer morning in the artic there was a polar bear who had a simple house with lights and so on. He switched the lights on…it was pitch black. Ten minutes later he broke the lights. He went to the the shop to buy more but they were too expensive. At night he went to sleep and thought of flying.
My name is Harry and I’m big and furry. I live in the circus with a funny crew. This summer we are flying around the world in our black super jet to entertain all the kids. We do our show in every country in the world. Just so you know the tickets are really expensive, but I AM Harry the best polar bear on show. You need to see me on my unicycle juggling seven balls. There is another polar bear called Charlie but I am better than him. Please come and see me, I’m really worth the money.
THE FLYING POLAR BEAR
Four polar bears, the mummy, daddy ,baby and the grandpa lived in a little cosy winter den in the North Pole. At 6 o clock having dinner, they ate quietly watching the Northern Lights glimmer against their fur. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a net landed out from the sky on top of all but the baby bear who ran for her life to be out of danger. She ran and ran until the summer evening sky turned black. At last she stopped to dig a den to sleep in for the night. Baby had the most wonderful dreams of flying to an expensive land (England) full of gumballs and there she set her family free, 13 hours later!! She awoke to find she had sprouted wings!!!!
Once there was a boy who had three eyes, however one eye could read people’s minds.
It helped his learning because he could get all the answers. So at school he got an A* because his friend is an A* student. Sometimes he picked the wrong person and did not get a good grade. You figure out the moral!
“Today we are going to do a test. Anyone have a question?… No. Row 4 go and sit at your tables. Row 3! And everyone. Quiet please…and start NOW!”

In the summer I’m flying to the Antarctic to buy a black polar bear. Daddy says it will be very expensive but he’ll do anything to put a smile on his princesses face. When we arrived in the Antarctic, there were no black polar bears, so we flew back home. I was sad. Suddenly there was a knock on my door, I went to open it and saw a soft black toy polar bear which daddy had made especially for me. I love my black polar bear because nobody else has one like me. I thanked my super daddy.
Hi, I’m a polar bear. My name is Mr Black. My opinion about things are mostly different to other peoples. I think human buses are silly because they have wheels instead of big white paws. It would be expensive to buy a polar bear bus and it’s summer so too hot to make one. One day I saw a crashed plane, I don’t like flying, so Mrs Black and I turned it into a bus with paws.
Twenty years later…
That’s how I lived to tell the tale that a couple of polar bears built a real bus!
One day, there was a black polar bear called James and he thought that he could fly. By summer he started to fly. Slowly, then faster. Then he knew he could fly higher then a bird. When he landed he said “Can I still walk?” He said “I can fly, I can walk, I can climb a tree. I can do three things well”. When it was getting late the people from London Zoo came to collect him. They asked me “How much does he cost?” “Two hundred and ten pounds”. They said “Wow that’s expensive!” So he went away, then I thought “I would love to have a pet polar bear”. I also thought that polar bears are very big and dangerous animals, so I cant possibly have them as a pet. Two days, later I headed back to the Zoo to see the polar bear, but the zookeeper told me some bad news that the polar bear had passed away. So I headed back home to look at pictures of polar bears whilst I was upset.
One hot summer day I was walking down the street and I noticed a new shop. It looked very expensive. It had air conditioning on so I decided to go inside. There was a big comfy black sofa. I sat down and closed my eyes and I fell asleep. I dreamt of a happy flying polar bear who became my friend. He told me his name was Bob. Bob found a fish and gave it to me. He said I should eat it. After that I woke up and guess what I saw? You are right it was the fish!
There was a boy called Benny Butt. He was very weird as he wore his polar bear pants on his head! Also he wasn’t very clever, once he tried to pick up an expensive tv but it was really heavy so it broke his hand and the tv went flying!
One day in the summer holidays he got smarter, and he learnt what 1+1 and 2+2 was. He got better and better, but he was really nervous so he didn’t go to school. But a ghost came and said “Just go to school!” so he went. But, he got hit by a black car and went to the hospital and turned into a ghost. As a ghost he went into a robot and never came out. He killed people and then exploded into dust.
BBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! THE EARTH EXPLODED!
